Role Overview
12-Month Fixed-Term Contract (FTC)
The Legal Consultant will provide a comprehensive and confidential legal consultancy service to the Investment Funds & Regulatory team in the Cayman Islands, with a specific focus on building our Latin America (LATAM) Practice. Working under the supervision of fee earners, the role provides specialised legal support and related administrative assistance on Cayman Islands investment funds matters, including matters involving clients, intermediaries, and service providers in LATAM. The position supports the formation, structuring, ongoing maintenance, regulatory compliance, closing, post-closing, and dissolution or termination of Cayman Islands investment funds. It requires investment funds and offshore financial services experience, strong drafting and research capability, attention to detail, and the ability to manage time-sensitive work for international clients. The role involves regular contact with internal teams and external stakeholders, including clients, onshore counsel, administrators, compliance professionals, and other service providers across multiple jurisdictions, including Portuguese-speaking stakeholders. This is a specialised support position. Portuguese fluency and LATAM experience are required because the role involves regular coordination with Portuguese-speaking clients, intermediaries, and counterparties in connection with Cayman Islands investment funds matters and business development activities. Key Responsibilities Legal and Transaction Support
Assisting fee earners with the formation, structuring, ongoing maintenance, and termination of investment funds
Support regulatory filings, fund launch closings, post-closing deliverables, and related deadline tracking.
Prepare first drafts and mark-ups of legal documents, including resolutions, minutes, subscription documents, closing checklists, and ancillary transaction materials, for fee earner review.
Conduct directed legal research on Cayman Islands laws, regulations, regulatory guidance, and fund-related matters.
Prepare correspondence, matter updates, and client-facing materials for review and approval by fee earners.
Act as a subject matter expert on specific ongoing matters
LATAM-Related Client Support and Business Development
Provide legal and administrative support on matters involving clients, intermediaries, and service providers based in Latin America.
Support fee earners with LATAM-related business development and client relationship activities, including preparing background materials, matter updates, pitch materials, and client presentations where required.
Coordinate cross-border work involving Portuguese-speaking clients, intermediaries, and counterparties, including communication of matter status and required documentation, and provide Portuguese translation of documents or on conference calls with clients when required.
Support onboarding and ongoing servicing of LATAM clients, including coordinating required documentation, KYC materials, and compliance checks.
Liaise, as appropriate, with internal colleagues and associated offices on cross-border matters, client service delivery, and follow-up actions.
Matter Management and Administration
Maintain accurate and organised matter files, document records, and supporting materials.
Assist fee earners with tracking workstreams, matter progression, deliverables, and key deadlines.
Following up on outstanding items to ensure timely completion of tasks
Keeping supervising fee earners informed of matter status and key developments
Identify and retrieve information necessary to support legal decision making.
Billing and Finance Support
Prepare fee matter estimates and quotes for issue by Partners, and support invoice preparation and client billing processes, including invoice collections.
Entering time and narratives for work performed
Contribute to knowledge management for the team and Brazilian market, ensuring that it is current and accurate.
Ensure effective management of time, effort, and resources to generate maximum efficiencies.
Requirements
Minimum 5 years’ PQE with proven experience in a LATAM jurisdiction and demonstrated experience in both investment funds and corporate transactions
Proven experience supporting cross-border matters and international client relationships within the LATAM region
Demonstrated experience supporting business development or client relationship activities in a professional services environment
Fluent Portuguese language skills (written and spoken) required, with experience working with Brazilian or wider LATAM clients
Strong written and verbal communication skills in English, with effective influencing skills
High level of accuracy, organisation, and attention to detail
Ability to manage competing priorities in a deadline-driven environment
Ability to formulate, consider, and select the most appropriate solutions
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively within a team
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and document management systems
