Job Description

Job Summary

Hospital pharmacists are in charge of all the medications dispensed in the hospital. They are experts in the use and safety of medications. They work alongside physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals. They advise doctors in determining the best possible treatment for specific diseases and ensure that the patient understands the medication and any side effects and/or drug interactions.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Dispensing & Medication Management

o Review inpatient medication orders for accuracy, dosage, interactions, and appropriateness. o Prepare and dispense medications to hospital wards and units, including IV preparations. o Monitor drug therapy for efficacy and safety, making recommendations as needed. o Counsel patients on the proper use, storage, and potential side effects of medications.

  • Regulatory & Compliance

o Ensure compliance with local pharmacy laws, import/export regulations, and professional standards. o Maintain proper documentation and records as required by local health authorities. o Ensure compliance with hospital protocols, national laws, and international guidelines. o Monitor for adverse drug reactions and medication errors and report as per the Hospital policy. o Participate in patient rounds and clinical discussions when required. o Good understanding on the High Alert/Emergency Medicine/LASA as per the JCI protocol. o Follow Health City Cayman Islands (HCCI) - Medication Management and Use (MMU) policies and procedures related to job. o To serve as a Clinical Resource & Consultant in all the areas of Pharmacy & Medication Management

  • Inventory Control

o Maintain accurate inventory records for inpatient medications, including controlled substances. o Manage stock levels, expiry tracking, daily audit and emergency drug supplies for words and ICUs o Coordinate with the store in charge to ensure timely availability of essential medicines.

  • Patient Care & Education

o Provide advice and education to patients and healthcare professionals on medication therapies. o Participate in health promotion and disease prevention activities. o Ward round participation and assisting clinicians in delivering effective medical care to patients – Practice of Evidence Based Medicine (EBM), Therapeutic Drug Monitoring, and Dosage Adjustments o To recommend Drug Recall in case of problems related to a specific formulation

  • Collaboration & Teamwork

o Work closely with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare staff to optimize patient outcomes. o Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and incident discussions.

  • Documentation & Quality Assurance

o Adhere to infection control procedures and medication safety protocols. o Participate in audits, quality control checks, and continuous professional development. o Maintain clear records of all dispensing and interventions using hospital pharmacy systems. o Participate in audits, medication use reviews, and pharmacy quality improvement initiatives. o Support antimicrobial stewardship and formulary compliance. o Active participation in Quarterly Pharmacy & Therapeutic Committee (PTC) meetings & Formulary Management. o To participate in continuous pharmacy education programs and staff education.

QUALIFICATION, LICENSURE, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SPECIAL SKILLS

  • Holds a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Pharmacy (BPharm, MPharm, or PharmD).
  • Licensed pharmacist in the home country with eligibility for licensure in the host country.
  • Brings over 3 years of experience in hospital or inpatient pharmacy settings.
  • Strong foundation in clinical pharmacology, hospital formularies, and intravenous (IV) preparation.
  • Fluent in English, the primary language of professional communication.
  • Familiar with international healthcare standards, including Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation.
  • Previous experience in international hospitals or expatriate healthcare assignments.
  • Completed training or certification in clinical pharmacy or hospital pharmacy practice.
  • Proficient in hospital information systems (HIS) and electronic prescribing platforms.
  • Experienced in managing infectious disease protocols, critical care pharmacotherapy, and oncology treatments.
