Job Description

The Chief Research & Conservation Officer (CR&CO) reports to the Chief Executive Officer and leads the Animal Programs Department. The role oversees the Curator of Terrestrial Education Exhibits, Lead Aquarist, Veterinarians, Turtle Husbandry Manager, and scientific interns, ensuring exceptional animal care while advancing research in turtle husbandry and conservation. Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the commercial turtle farm, including breeding, hatchery operations, stock turtles, meat processing, sales, and public exhibits.
  • Oversee the procurement of feed, laboratory chemicals, and farm supplies.
  • Lead research on turtle health, nutrition, hatchery techniques, and conservation.
  • Manage the research laboratory and coordinate projects involving visiting scientists, interns, and researchers.
  • Support the Marine, Aquatic Life Support System (ALSS), and Terrestrial departments.
  • Maintain biological datasets, prepare reports for the CEO, and ensure compliance with regulatory reporting, including water chemistry, histology, and bacteriology testing.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Aquaculture, Marine Biology, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 10 years' relevant laboratory and field experience, preferably in a commercial production facility.
  • Strong record of peer-reviewed publications and research expertise.
  • ALSS Proficiency Certification (Level 1 minimum) preferred.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, analytical, and data management skills.
