Job Description

Island Recycling Ltd. is seeking a full-time Diesel Technician who will report to the Supervisor, Operations Coordinator & General Manager Determines vehicle/equipment and will determine the condition of the vehicles and equipment by conducting inspections and diagnostic tests, identifying worn and damaged parts and carrying out repairs on company vehicles and equipment.

  • Determines vehicle condition by conducting inspections and diagnostic test; identifying worn and damage parts and carrying out repairs on company vehicles and equipment.
  • Keep equipment available for use by completing preventive maintenance schedules, installing component and part upgrades, controlling corrosion, completing winterization procedures.
  • Corrects vehicle deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, parts or systems such as power and drive trains, electrical, air conditioning, fuel, emission, brake, steering, hydraulics, completes machine shop operations, making adjustments and alignments including bearing loads, gear tooth contact, valve mechanisms, governors, oil systems, control linkages clutches, and traction units.
  • Verifies vehicle performance by conducting test drives, adjusting controls and systems.
  • Complies with federal and state vehicle requirements by testing engine, safety, and combustion control standards.
  • Maintains vehicle appearance by cleaning, washing, and painting when required and maintains vehicle records by annotating services and repairs in fleet system.
  • Keeps shop equipment operating by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining supplies, performing preventive maintenance, calling for repairs.
  • Contains costs by using warranty, evaluating service and parts options.
  • Doing tire changes for units when required.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading technical and regulation publications.
  • Enhances maintenance department and organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests, exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
  • Maintaining a clean working area.
  • Operates equipment when requested by the company.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); technical diploma desired.
  • Minimum of one (5) year experience as a diesel mechanic.
  • Experience using Caterpillar ET and Mack Software diagnostic software a requirement.
  • Must be computer literate, have the ability to be trained on software systems and the willingness to learn.
  • Obtain a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of employment.
  • Must pass a physical including drug screening.

Physical/Mental Demands

  • Ability to stand, sit, walk, use hands and fingers, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, climb, balance, taste, and smell.
  • Continuous concentrated mental and visual attention required.
  • Visual requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Frequent physical effort including handling tools and equipment required.
  • Frequently lift/push/pull up to 100 pounds.

Salary range CI$13.00 - CI$20 per hour (commensurate with qualifications & experience) working 45 hours per week. Monday to Saturday from 7am to 5pm. Benefits as deemed by law.
