Job Description

The Cayman Islands Humane Society is the only non-profit rehoming facility in the Cayman Islands. We operate adoption, foster, stray care, and community veterinary services. We have a no-kill ethos and are based in the heart of George Town, Grand Cayman, with occasional visits to Little Cayman and Cayman Brac. We are seeking an enthusiastic, versatile, experienced, and passionate Shelter Veterinarian to join our dedicated team and make a real difference in the lives and wellbeing of the islands’ most vulnerable cats and dogs. This role offers a varied and interesting medical caseload and the opportunity to contribute to the ongoing development of the shelter. The ideal candidate will be a team player with a non-judgmental approach to the community’s animal welfare needs. This is a full-time position, working 40 hours per week plus on-call duties during evenings and weekends (up to 50% of evenings and weekends).

Key duties and responsibilities include

Performing a range of surgical procedures, with a high percentage of spay and neuter surgeries. Managing anaesthesia for patients at varying risk levels. Working closely with animal care staff and providing detailed prognoses and care plans. Participating in neutering and spaying camps, including occasional nights on Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. Managing spay/neuter surgeries, welfare cases, behaviour cases and modification plans, heartworm treatment, and general healthcare of shelter animals. Staying current with global developments and resources related to shelter medicine.

Desirable experience

Proficiency with a variety of surgical procedures. Experience treating and managing animals with heartworm.

Qualifications

Fully qualified veterinarian, currently licensed and in good standing. Eligible for registration in the Cayman Islands. At least 5 years’ postgraduate experience (small animal experience preferred). Fluency in English. Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to communicate promptly and effectively.
