Job Description

Position: Commercial Electrician

Job Overview

The Electrical Commercial Electrician is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems in commercial buildings and facilities. This role involves reading and interpreting electrical blueprints, wiring diagrams, and technical documents to ensure that electrical installations are completed safely, efficiently, and to the required standards. The Electrical Commercial Electrician plays a crucial role in ensuring the functionality and safety of electrical systems in commercial environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervision: Lead and supervise technicians and installers on job sites. Provide clear instructions, delegate tasks, and ensure adherence to project plans and safety standards.
  • Work Planning: Plan daily work layouts, coordinate schedules, and manage materials and resources for efficient project execution.
  • Installation: Install electrical systems, including wiring, lighting, and control systems, according to blueprints and technical specifications.
  • Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance and repairs on electrical systems to ensure they operate efficiently and safely.
  • Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve electrical issues by inspecting systems, identifying faults, and repairing or replacing components.
  • Compliance: Ensure all electrical work complies with safety regulations and electrical codes. Conduct site inspections to verify adherence to project specifications and standards.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and any issues encountered. Complete required paperwork and reports.
  • Quality Control: Perform quality checks to ensure work meets required standards.
  • Communication: Communicate effectively with clients, team members, and supervisors to ensure tasks are completed efficiently.
  • Problem Resolution: Provide technical advice and resolve problems to ensure that standards for quality, reliability, and safety are met.
  • Tool Management: Maintain and organize tools and equipment. Ensure tools are in good working condition.
  • Project Coordination: Assist in the coordination of electrical construction activities on commercial projects. Work closely with other trades and contractors to ensure project timelines are met.
  • Resource Management: Ensure the timely delivery and storage of equipment and materials. Manage project resources effectively to meet project goals.
  • Inspection and Testing: Coordinate inspection, testing, commissioning, and programming of electrical installations.
  • Supervision: Correctly instruct, supervise, and transfer skills to any wireman or apprentice worker assigned to ensure safety and quality of work.
  • Technical Interpretation: Read and interpret complicated electrical specifications, wiring and circuit diagrams, and building plans.
  • Electrical Calculations: Perform electrical calculations associated with current carrying capacity of cables, wires derating, mixed conduit fills, fuses, and circuit protective devices sizing.
  • Conduit Installation: Install all conduit sizes 1/2" to 4", including advanced knowledge of EMT conduit bending.
  • Wiring Installation: Install all types of commonly used wiring, wiring accessories including but not limited to data, phone, TV, BMS, CCTV, security, fire alarm, and power systems.
  • Equipment Installation: Install electrical equipment such as lights, switches, receptacles, motor starters, controllers, switchgears, switchboards, busbars, transformers, control panels, etc.
  • Advanced Inspection and Testing: Perform advanced inspection, testing, and commissioning of the above-listed installations and wiring in accordance with regulations and project specifications.
  • Advanced Troubleshooting and Maintenance: Perform advanced troubleshooting and maintenance, and repair the above-listed installations and wiring in accordance with regulations and project specifications.
  • Project Close-Outs: Perform project close-outs including documentation and demobilization.
  • Safety Compliance: Use safety equipment, and protective devices and equipment as per safety and health guidelines and environmental concerns.
  • Mechanical Fitting: Carry out mechanical fitting and assembling works including heavy lifting and pulling up to 100 lbs.

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of an accredited electrical apprenticeship program. Preferred education: Associate Degree or 2-year equivalent such as trade school or apprenticeship program.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited electrical apprenticeship program preferred.
  • Valid electrician license as required by government.
  • Additional certifications such as NFPA 70 and OSHA compliance training are beneficial.
  • 5 years of experience in commercial electrical wiring installation, maintenance, and repair.
  • Valid Cayman Islands or NEC Electrical License.
  • Knowledge of NFPA 70, NFPA 72, and ANSI/TIA-568.
  • Clean police record and valid driver’s license.

  • Proficient computer literacy with competency in Microsoft applications.
  • Ability to complete paperwork, such as timecards and materials forms, on a computerized system following company procedures.

Work Environment

  • Works on construction sites and various facilities, often exposed to outdoor elements.
  • Exposure to adverse conditions, including rain, extreme heat (+100°F), and freezing temperatures (-10°F).
  • Work at heights over 25' on ladders, raised platforms, and in various confined spaces such as manholes and trenches.
  • Will require extended hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, particularly during project deadlines or peak periods.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting heavy objects (up to 100 pounds).
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and perform repetitive movements for extended periods.
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
  • Ability to travel to different work sites as needed.
  • Strong physical stamina and the ability to perform strenuous tasks.
  • Ability to identify colors of cables.
