Job Description
Northern Re is a rapidly growing collateralized reinsurance company providing investors with access to data-driven portfolios of property and casualty risk. Combining deep industry ties, a sustainable capital structure and a partner-first approach to collateral. We are seeking a Head of Data Science to lead the development of data, analytics, and automation capabilities as the organization scales. This role will be responsible for designing and implementing the company’s core data infrastructure, building analytical tools for underwriting and financial analysis, and driving automation across key business processes. The Head of Data Science will work closely with leadership, underwriting, finance, and risk teams to ensure data systems support strategic decision-making, portfolio analysis, and operational efficiency. This is a hands-on leadership role suited to a technically strong data professional with experience building scalable systems and advanced analytics solutions. Key Responsibilities Data Strategy & Architecture
Build on, maintain, and own development of the company's core models.
Design and implement the company’s data architecture and database infrastructure to support underwriting, portfolio analytics, and financial reporting.
Build and maintain scalable data pipelines and structured data environments.
Develop data governance standards and ensure data integrity across systems.
Harden and institutionalize excel based models for the future.
Analytics & Data Science
Develop advanced analytical models to support risk analysis, pricing insights, and portfolio monitoring.
Apply statistical and mathematical techniques to analyze underwriting performance and reinsurance portfolios.
Partner with finance and underwriting teams to produce meaningful data-driven insights.
Systems Development & Automation
Lead development of internal tools and applications that support business operations.
Design and implement automation solutions for reporting, data processing, and operational workflows.
Integrate internal systems with external data sources and platforms.
Business Intelligence & Reporting
Build and maintain BI dashboards and reporting tools for senior leadership.
Deliver real-time analytics and visualization to support decision making.
Automate financial, underwriting, and operational reporting.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with underwriting, finance, and operations teams to translate business needs into technical solutions.
Provide technical leadership and guidance on data and analytics initiatives.
Support strategic projects related to company growth and operational scaling.
Required Skills & Experience
Strong experience in data science, analytics, or data engineering.
Advanced programming experience with Python, R, or C#.
Experience designing and managing database systems (SQL and graph/large-scale data environments).
Expertise in system development, API integration, and scalable architecture.
Experience building business intelligence dashboards and automated reporting systems.
Strong mathematical and financial analysis skills.
Ability to translate complex data into actionable business insights.
Preferred Experience
5-7 years of experience in a similar role in insurance, reinsurance, or financial services analytics.
Highly proficient expertise in risk modelling, portfolio analytics, or actuarial data environments.
Experience working with large-scale data frameworks (e.g., Spark).
Familiarity with modern development practices including CI/CD pipelines and REST API development.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Finance, or a related quantitative discipline.
A Master’s degree in Data Science, Statistics, Financial Engineering, or Applied Mathematics would be advantageous.
Remuneration and Benefits Salary in the range of US$170,000-190,000, health insurance, pension and eligible for an annual discretionary bonus award.
