Montessori Early Childhood Practitioner & Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO)

Position Overview The Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo) role is to support students with diverse learning needs within our Montessori environment. The role requires a compassionate and collaborative approach. The SENCo will work closely with teachers, school leadership, families, and external professionals to ensure that students receive appropriate support and accommodations while maintaining alignment with Montessori philosophy and practices. This role is focused on fostering an inclusive learning environment where every child is supported academically, socially, and emotionally to reach their full potential. Key Responsibilities

Student Support & Coordination

• Identify and support students with additional learning, behavioural, social-emotional, or developmental needs
• Coordinate and oversee student support plans and accommodations
• Monitor student progress and maintain appropriate documentation
• Support transitions and continuity of care between classrooms and levels

Collaboration with Teachers

• Work closely with classroom guides and assistants to develop inclusive strategies within the Montessori environment
• Provide guidance on differentiation, accommodations, and classroom supports
• Support teachers in implementing individualized interventions and learning plans
• Observe classrooms and provide practical recommendations for student support

Family Communication

• Partner with families in a respectful, collaborative, and solution-focused manner
• Coordinate meetings with parents regarding student progress and support plans
• Help families access external resources and specialist services when appropriate

External Professional Liaison

• Coordinate communication with educational psychologists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, counsellors, and other specialists
• Support the implementation of recommendations from external assessments and reports

Inclusion & Wellbeing

• Promote inclusive educational practices across the school community
• Support social-emotional wellbeing initiatives and positive behavioural support approaches
• Assist in fostering a nurturing, respectful, and child-centered learning environment

Record Keeping & Compliance

• Maintain confidential student records and support documentation
• Ensure appropriate monitoring and review processes are in place
• Assist with school policies related to inclusion and student support services

Professional Development

• Support staff training and professional development related to inclusion and special educational needs
• Stay informed on current best practices in inclusive education and Montessori-aligned interventions

Qualifications & Experience

• Accredited Montessori diploma or equivalent qualification is preferred
• SENCo qualification or relevant experience supporting students with additional needs
• Experience working in a school setting
• Understanding of child development and inclusive education practices
• Strong communication and collaboration skills
• Compassionate, organised, and proactive approach
