Medical Doctor: Oncologist & Hematologist

The primary objectives of the Medical Oncologist of the Oncology Service at Doctors Hospital are to ensure:

• That prompt diagnosis of patients with all kinds of cancer presentations, by way of a thorough history and the utilizing blood investigations, X-ray, Mammogram, Ultrasound, CT Scan, PET Scan, MRI, Bone Density Scan, Biopsy, etc., when appropriate.
• The relief of symptoms and successful outcomes by the application of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery as options for treatment, whether directly in Doctors Hospital or through additional specialized entities, preferably the Baptist Health International’s Miami Cancer Institute.

This objective takes into account the social, psychological and physical needs of the patients and their families to achieve the maximum benefit from their medical treatment. The Consultant in Medical Oncology will be a highly experienced and qualified Physician with skills necessary to organize and manage the clinical activity, staff and other resources assigned to the Oncology Service so as to ensure optimal care for cancer patients.

Duties and Responsibilities of Medical Oncologist (and Clinical Director)

• Provide a professional clinical service to patients, ensuring a team-based approach to care in liaison with other clinicians, nursing staff and technicians.
• Manage his clinical workload to ensure that patients are treated promptly, appropriately and efficiently using proven and validated techniques, where possible based on world-wide research and international best practice.
• Ensure exemplary humane handling of patients with good communication, clear information about the options for care and/or treatment on a continuing basis together with involvement, as far as is practicable, in their own care and treatment.
• Contribute to the formulation, implementation and monitoring of clinical protocols for treating patients to ensure a consistently high standard of care to patients based upon proven and validated techniques.
• Participate in the implementation of a Quality Assurance Program for medical oncology covering all aspects of patient care and treatment from reception and registration to discharge and after-care.
• Ensure that the resources made available to the Oncology Services are utilized in an effective and efficient manner.
• Contribute to the corporate branding, strategy and vision of Doctors Hospital through participation in multi-disciplinary discussions and decision-making within the Oncology Service.
• Participate in developing outreach programs and joint working arrangements with other clinical disciplines in the public and private sectors in order to assist and advise other specialists to determine the most appropriate course of cancer treatment under protocols jointly agreed.
• Participate in the promotion of cancer education in the Cayman Islands through the many DH Partnership ventures, social engagements or Continuing Medical Education (CME) opportunities, all of which support the Oncology Service exposure to offering healthy lifestyle alternatives and preventative measures to reduce cancer.
• Remain professionally up-dated through journals, conferences, etc. to ensure that new benefits in cancer care are available to patients of the Oncology Service.
• Participate in maintaining clinical information systems to facilitate clinical and managerial decision making.
• Participate in the development of links in clinical activity, research and education which may attract additional income to the Oncology Service.
