Broadcast Technician

Compass Media is seeking a hands-on Broadcast Technician to maintain reliable live and recorded broadcast operations across studio and master control. This role also serves as Backup Technical Director (TD), able to step in to run live shows when required and support production continuity.

Key responsibilities

Broadcast technician (Primary)

• Ensure uptime and quality across studio + MCR systems; respond quickly to faults during live shows.
• Troubleshoot video/audio/control paths across: cameras/CCU, router, switcher I/O, multiviewers, intercom/IFB, audio (embedded/discrete), graphics/playout, ingest/record, streaming/transmission.
• Perform pre-show checks and verify critical paths (program/clean feeds, recording, comms, returns/tally).
• Execute preventative maintenance: patching/cabling, labeling, equipment health checks, config backups, firmware planning.
• Maintain documentation: signal flow, patch maps, rack layouts, IP addressing, SOPs, change logs.
• Support remote contribution workflows (video calls/encoders/IP feeds) and resolve stability/lip-sync issues.

Backup technical director (Secondary)

• Step in as backup TD for Daybreak/News/Specials as scheduled or needed.
• Operate the switcher and execute rundowns cleanly: cuts, transitions, source selection, timing, playback cues, coordination with graphics/audio/cameras.
• Assist with show templates, switcher setup/memories/macros (where applicable) to keep builds consistent.
• Training and mentorship:
• Lead training sessions for new Broadcast Technicians, providing insights into technical operations and broadcasting protocols.
• Develop and refine training materials based on the latest industry standards and technological advancements.
• Serve as a mentor to junior staff, promoting a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth.

Qualifications

• Minimum 10 years in broadcast engineering or live production technical operations (studio/MCR).
• Strong live troubleshooting skills; calm under pressure.
• Solid understanding of broadcast workflows (SDI/IP as applicable), sync/genlock, embedded audio, intercom/IFB.
• Proven capability to TD live shows (or equivalent switcher operation experience).
• Strong documentation habits and reliability mindset.

Preferred

• IP/streaming experience (e.g., NDI/SRT/RTMP/HLS) and basic network troubleshooting (ping/traceroute/Wireshark).
• Audio networking (Dante/AES67) and/or wireless mic coordination.
• Relevant certifications (SBE/CCNA/Dante) are a plus.
