Animal Caretakers are responsible for the daily care and welfare of cats and dogs at the shelter. This includes feeding, exercising, socializing, medicating (as directed), cleaning, and assisting with shelter operations. Full time hours are 45 hours per week 7am to 4pm/5pm Monday to Saturday with one day off, 7am to 12 noon on Sunday with Sunday afternoon 2pm to 4pm on rotation. Animal Caretakers report to the Staff Supervisor.
Treat all animals humanely and with compassion. Promote a caring and positive attitude toward all animals. Feed animals according to dietary requirements. Ensure animals have clean water at all times. Clean assigned areas daily, including kennels, floors, bedding, dishes, and general shelter areas. Spot-clean animal and public areas as needed throughout the day. Administer medication as directed by the veterinary team or management. Exercise and socialize animals daily. Groom and bathe animals as directed. Assist with laundry and general shelter upkeep. Assist with animal transportation to veterinary appointments or events (company vehicle provided for eligible employees). Maintain a safe, clean, and pleasant environment for animals and the public and assist with reception when required. Provide friendly, professional customer service. Collaborate effectively with staff, volunteers, and the public. Monitor and report medical or behavioral changes promptly. Re-stock supplies and report supply levels in a timely manner. Support colleagues and perform other duties as needed.
Minimum 1 year of full-time experience as a caretaker in a shelter or boarding environment preferred with comparable welfare standards. Experience in customer service, janitorial, or related field. Compassion for animals and concern for their welfare. Ability to learn and remember each animal’s name and personality. Confidence in handling animals of unknown disposition, including those with medical or behavioral issues. Strong interpersonal, communication, customer service, and time management skills. Ability to work independently after training and take professional feedback. Proficient in English (reading, writing, speaking). Good numeracy and observation skills. Knowledge of animal behavior gained through work, volunteering, or training. Able to work with both cats and dogs; no allergies to either.
