Job Description

Job Summary: The Line Cook is responsible for preparing and cooking food according to the restaurant's standards and recipes, ensuring quality and consistency. This role involves working in a fast-paced kitchen environment, maintaining a clean and organized workstation, and collaborating with other kitchen staff to deliver a high-quality dining experience for guests.

Key Responsibilities

  • Food Preparation: Prepare ingredients for cooking, including washing, chopping, and slicing vegetables, cutting meat, and measuring ingredients according to recipes.
  • Cooking: Cook menu items according to the restaurant's recipes and standards, using various cooking methods such as grilling, frying, sautéing, and baking. Monitor food to ensure it is cooked to the correct temperature and consistency.
  • Plating: Assemble and plate dishes in an attractive and consistent manner, ensuring that all food is presented according to the restaurant's standards.
  • Station Management: Maintain a clean, organized, and fully stocked workstation. Ensure that all necessary supplies, ingredients, and equipment are available and in good working order.
  • Quality Control: Inspect food items for quality, freshness, and proper preparation. Discard outdated or spoiled items and report any issues to the kitchen manager or chef.
  • Kitchen Hygiene: Follow food safety and sanitation guidelines at all times, including proper handwashing, handling of raw foods, and cleaning of work surfaces. Regularly clean and sanitize kitchen equipment, utensils, and work areas.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with other line cooks, prep cooks, and kitchen staff to ensure smooth kitchen operations, especially during peak hours. Communicate effectively with the head chef and other team members to coordinate orders and maintain efficiency.
  • Time Management: Prepare and serve food within the expected time frame, especially during busy service periods, while maintaining quality and consistency.
  • Inventory Management: Assist in monitoring inventory levels, reporting shortages, and properly storing food items to reduce waste and ensure freshness.
  • Menu Development: Occasionally contribute to the development of new dishes and menu items, providing input based on customer feedback and personal experience.
  • Safety Compliance: Adhere to all health and safety regulations, including wearing appropriate kitchen attire, using knives and kitchen equipment safely, and reporting any accidents or unsafe conditions.

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Culinary school or formal culinary training is a plus.
  • Experience: Prior experience as a line cook or in a similar role within a high-volume kitchen is required.
  • Skills:

o Proficient in various cooking techniques, including grilling, frying, and sautéing. o Strong knife skills and familiarity with kitchen equipment. o Excellent attention to detail and ability to maintain high standards under pressure. o Good time management and organizational skills. o Ability to work well in a team-oriented environment. o Understanding of food safety and sanitation practices.

Working Conditions

  • The job involves standing for long periods, working in a hot, noisy, and fast-paced environment.
  • Lifting heavy pots, pans, and boxes of ingredients is often required.
  • Line cooks typically work evenings, weekends, and holidays, depending on the restaurant's operating hours.
