ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE

REPORT TO : Nursing Manager / Nurse In Charge Liaises With : Doctors/ Nursing Team/ Allied Health Professional Billing Team/ Support Services/ Patients & Family Job Purpose The Registered Nurse provides comprehensive, evidence-based, and patient-centered nursing care across multiple clinical departments in a multispecialty hospital setting. The role involves delivering high-quality clinical care, supporting departmental workflows, ensuring accurate documentation, maintaining patient safety, and collaborating effectively within multidisciplinary teams in a culturally diverse healthcare environment. Deployment across departments will be based on competency, experience, and organizational requirements.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

SCOPE OF PRACTICE & DEPARTMENTAL DEPLOYMENT

  • The Registered Nurse may be assigned to one or more of the following areas:
  • Outpatient Department (OPD)
  • Inpatient Wards (Medical & Surgical)
  • Emergency Department
  • Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
  • Operation Theatre (OT)
  • Maternity Services
  • Neonatal Unit / NICU
  • Dialysis

  • Post Anesthesia care unit

The nurse is expected to adapt quickly to departmental protocols, clinical workflows, and patient acuity levels.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

General Clinical Nursing Responsibilities

  • Deliver safe, effective, and compassionate nursing care in accordance with hospital policies, clinical guidelines, and professional standards
  • Conduct comprehensive patient assessments and ongoing evaluations
  • Monitor and document vital signs, clinical observations, and patient progress
  • Administer medications, IV therapy, blood products, and treatments as prescribed
  • Assist medical practitioners during examinations, procedures, and interventions
  • Recognize, respond to, and escalate patient deterioration promptly
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and legally compliant clinical documentation in HIS/EHR systems.
  • Conduct daily department inventory checks and ensure adequate stock availability.
  • Raise and process pharmacy indents for medicines and surgical supplies as per patient requirements and unit protocols
  • Ensure proper handling, safe usage, and maintenance of medical equipment; promptly report any malfunction.
  • Assist patients with mobilization, transfers, and transportation while ensuring safety and comfort.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of patient health information in compliance with hospital policy and ethical standards.
  • Adhere to established Nursing Department policies, procedures, and clinical protocols.
  • Follow the defined reporting structure and chain of command; promptly escalate patient care concerns, procedural deviations, and adverse events to the Head of Department or immediate supervisor.
  • Attend and actively participate in ward/unit meetings, training sessions, and departmental briefings.
  • Ensure compliance with unit-based quality indicators and contribute to continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Perform accurate service ordering (CPT-based) and ensure timely processing and coordination of all requested services in accordance with established protocols.

Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Nursing Responsibilities

  • Provide Level 2 and Level 3 critical care nursing to adult and pediatric patients
  • Manage patients requiring mechanical ventilation, hemodynamic support, and advanced monitoring
  • Administer high-risk medications including inotropes, sedation, and analgesia
  • Perform systematic assessments and individualized care planning
  • Participate in end-of-life care and family support when required

Operation Theatre (OT) Nursing Responsibilities

  • Prepare patients for surgical procedures
  • Assist during intra-operative procedures as scrub or circulating nurse (as trained)
  • Ensure adherence to sterile technique and infection control practices
  • Support post-operative recovery and patient transfer
  • Maintain OT equipment readiness and documentation

Emergency Department Nursing Responsibilities

  • Perform rapid triage assessments using CTAS or equivalent triage systems
  • Provide emergency care to adult and pediatric patients
  • Initiate emergency protocols and standing orders within scope of practice
  • Assist in trauma care, resuscitation, and stabilization
  • Monitor waiting patients and escalate deterioration
  • Ensure accurate and timely documentation of emergency care

Inpatient Ward Nursing Responsibilities

  • Provide holistic nursing care for medical and surgical patients
  • Support admission, transfer, and discharge planning
  • Deliver pre-operative and post-operative nursing care
  • Perform wound assessments, surgical dressings, and pain management
  • Participate in ward rounds, handovers, and multidisciplinary meetings

Maternity Nursing Responsibilities

  • Provide antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal nursing care
  • Monitor maternal and fetal wellbeing using appropriate tools
  • Assist during normal and operative deliveries
  • Provide newborn care, breastfeeding support, and postnatal education
  • Support women and families with emotional and psychological care

Neonatal Nursing Responsibilities

  • Deliver specialized care to neonates requiring Level 2 and Level 3 support
  • Provide respiratory, nutritional, developmental, and thermoregulation care
  • Support neonatal resuscitation and emergency interventions
  • Administer weight-based medications and nutritional support
  • Deliver family-centered neonatal care and discharge education

Dialysis Nurse

  • Assess patients pre-, intra-, and post-dialysis
  • Prepare and operate dialysis machines safely
  • Cannulate AV fistula/graft and manage dialysis catheters
  • Monitor vital signs, fluid balance, and complications
  • Administer prescribed medications and anticoagulation
  • Maintain accurate dialysis documentation
  • Educate patients on fluid, diet, access care, and treatment adherence
  • Adhere to infection prevention and water quality standards

Outpatient Department (OPD) Responsibilities

  • Coordinate patient flow, appointment schedules, and room readiness
  • Prepare patients for consultations, procedures, and investigations
  • Perform phlebotomy, injections, wound care, and minor procedures
  • Support diagnostic coordination including radiology and laboratory services
  • Liaise with front office and billing teams regarding scheduling, charges, and follow-ups
  • Provide patient education, instructions, and discharge advice
  • Perform venipuncture and capillary blood sampling safely
  • Ensure correct patient identification, specimen labeling, and transport
  • Support diagnostic imaging procedures (X-ray, CT, MRI, Ultrasound)
  • Ensure patient safety, comfort, and infection control during procedures

Chemotherapy Nurse

  • Assess patients before, during, and after chemotherapy
  • Prepare and administer chemotherapy as per protocol
  • Monitor for adverse reactions and manage emergencies
  • Maintain safe handling and disposal of cytotoxic drugs
  • Provide patient and family education
  • Ensure accurate oncology documentation
  • Support palliative and psychosocial care needs

MEDICAL EQUIPMENT KNOWLEDGE & COMPETENCE

  • Demonstrate safe and competent use of medical equipment, including: - Vital signs and patient monitoring systems - Infusion pumps and syringe drivers - Oxygen delivery and suction equipment - ECG and cardiac monitoring devices - Ventilators, CPAP, and high-flow oxygen systems - Neonatal and maternity-specific equipment
  • Responsibilities include: - Performing routine safety checks - Reporting faults promptly - Maintaining competency through training and assessment

COMMUNICATION & CUSTOMER CARE

  • Communicate clearly, respectfully, and empathetically with patients and families
  • Act as a patient advocate and first point of contact when required
  • Address patient concerns and escalate issues appropriately
  • Maintain professionalism in a multicultural environment

QUALITY, SAFETY & COMPLIANCE

  • Adhere to infection prevention and control policies
  • Comply with patient safety, safeguarding, and fire safety protocols
  • Participate in clinical audits, incident reporting, and quality improvement initiatives
  • Maintain valid CPR/BLS/ACLS certification as required

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  • Participate in mandatory training, clinical drills, and competency assessments

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • GNM / Bachelor’s / master’s degree in nursing from an accredited institution
  • Valid Registered Nurse license (Cayman Islands or eligible for registration)
  • BLS/ACLS certification (preferred)
  • Minimum 3–5 years of clinical experience in a multispecialty hospital setting
